What is a blue moon?

When it comes to astrology, it’s not just the sun that shapes your world. The moon is also incredibly influential, which is why you’ll want to pay particular attention to August 2021’s blue moon. But first, a primer on this lunar phenomenon. There are two types of blue moons: the second full moon in one month, or the third of fourth full moons in a season. Basically, it’s an extra cycle of the full moon that doesn’t usually happen (and no, it’s not actually blue). On August 22, 2021, we will see a seasonal blue moon.

According to astrologer Emily Ridout, this blue moon is even more special for a few cosmic reasons. “We’re having two full moons in Aquarius this year, where we’d usually have one,” she says. “This one takes place at conjunct retrograde Jupiter, which brings themes of major expansion—releasing the old and embracing the new in different areas of their lives.” Aquarian energy is marked by innovation, humanitarianism, and technology. It emphasizes the power of an individual to change things for a better, fairer, more efficient future. “It’s giving us an opportunity to reset, release, and renegotiate how we are in our lives and in our society,” Ridout explains. “It’s time to release old patterns and try to implement new ones.”

This 2021 blue moon can have a profound impact on each of the zodiac signs. For some, it is a chance to evaluate relationships and figure out who they’re truly compatible with. For others, it’s about learning to trust themselves as much as they trust others. From tiny changes in your daily life to large-scale shifts that affect the future, this full moon has the potential to be a lucky time for you—if you handle it the right way. You can also consult your Chinese zodiac sign to find out more about what’s in store for you this year.

Aries (March 21–April 19)

Aquarius energy has many signs thinking about their place in their community. For Aries, it’s time to reexamine what your leadership role is—and what it should really be. “It’s time to feel excited and aligned with what you’re doing,” Ridout says, “not that you’re performing outdated roles. Maybe you volunteered to do something once 10 years ago, and now you’re stuck even though it’s not benefiting you anymore.” This 2021 blue moon is prompting Aries to cast aside old obligations in favor of new ones that can provide a greater sense of fulfillment. You’ll be able to serve both yourself and your community better when you find a new home for your leadership skills. Taurus (April 20–May 20)

This lunar event will strike Taurus most in the professional sector. Bulls will need to assess where they are in their career and what their reputation is. It might be time to change the way you approach work projects or how you interact with coworkers. Your innate stubbornness could make this uncomfortable for you, though. “Taurus tends to be steady in its approach to life,” Ridout explains, “so this theme of innovation and letting go of old ways of doing things might not feel great.” Still, it will be worth the effort in the end. You might want to utilize your zodiac sign’s power color at this time for a bit of an extra boost.

Gemini (May 21–June 20)

As much as people like to define themselves by their interests or how they do things, the fact is that humans are constantly evolving. The summer blue moon of 2021 will make Gemini acutely aware that they are in a time of transformation. Ridout provides this example: “If they loved to travel, they might realize that’s not their calling anymore. Now, they explore the world a different way.” Perhaps you’re interested in reading up on the history of a country instead of going out and booking plane tickets right away. The opposite could also be true. “If you’re an armchair philosopher, it [could be] time to get up and do things,” Ridout says. No matter what kind of Gemini you are, you will begin to experience a change in perspective.

Cancer (June 21–July 22)

The innovative spirit of Aquarius makes this blue moon optimal for problem-solving. For Cancer, that concept will fall in the realm of familial or interpersonal relationships. “Cancer might find a deeply healing theme in this moon,” Ridout surmises. “If there’s been a family drama that’s been playing out for a long time, this is a time when they can shift that.” A nasty divorce may finally get a chance at a better resolution, for example. Or you may be ready to confront a deep-seated issue with your parents. Whatever the case, it comes down to the ability to connect deeply with others in a new way. Since Cancer is one of the most polite zodiac signs, this quality may come into play, too.

Leo (July 23–August 22)

Like Cancer, Leo will also be taking a closer look at relationships—but in a different way. You may be used to thinking about your relationship in terms of what you get out of it, Leo, but this full moon will illuminate the need to take the other person’s desires into consideration. “It’s the recognition of the other person’s sovereignty,” Ridout says. The balance of power will shift in a way that is more equitable, and both people will be able to figure out what kind of relationship they’re really looking for. “Some people are in relationships they don’t want to be in, so they’ll break up,” she explains. “Others are in relationships they like being in, and they will get an upgrade.” Whatever happens, it will be beneficial for both you and your partner in the long run. Find out how your rising sign can also affect your interactions with others, not just during the 2021 blue moon but all year long.

Virgo (August 23–September 22)

Virgo loves to be productive, but taking on too many projects at once can have the opposite effect. You have probably started to feel inundated lately. Thankfully, August’s 2021 blue moon will create an opening for you to clean house and take stock of what’s most important. “Look at what you’ve been doing every day,” Ridout advises. “What projects, goals, or activities have either reached completion or have turned into a burden that you don’t want anymore? If something is lacking joy and is draining you, this is the moment you can release it.”

Remember your passion, and focus your time and energy on what brings you the greatest sense of purpose and fulfillment. Did you finish writing that short story? Good. Stop editing it to death. Did you start gardening during the pandemic, only to realize it’s not the hobby for you? Don’t force yourself to keep up with it. You tried; now move on.

Libra (September 23–October 22)

It can be hard to separate work life and personal life. People often get stuck thinking about the things they have to do, not the things they want to do. Now is the time to get rid of that stale energy. Ridout urges Libras to ask themselves, “Are you having fun? Have you had some play in your life? It’s so easy in life to get focused on working, on doing things for others, and to forget that one of the most important aspects in life is play.”

You may feel guilty about taking time to yourself to simply have fun, but remember that enjoying yourself is its own necessity. Taking time off to relax or to adventure will allow you to recharge and refresh, giving you the fuel you need to get back to work. Fun can ignite inspiration and creativity that you sorely need. FYI, here’s the best way to de-stress, according to your zodiac sign.

Scorpio (October 23–November 21)

This seasonal blue moon welcomes improvement in all aspects of life. For Scorpio, the focus will be on coming into their own. Think about how you want to live, not how other people say you should—especially when it comes to home life. “It’s about making your home the way you actually want it to be,” Ridout says. “Don’t abide by old restrictions that don’t bring you joy, [like] how you thought you needed to be in your childhood family. We tend to carry those things internally into our adulthood.” Let go of the expectations your parents put on you as a kid. Eat dessert before dinner every once in a while. Big or small, make adjustments and learn what it means to make a home and a life for yourself. If you’re looking for a new companion, this is the dog breed that’s most compatible with your zodiac sign.

Sagittarius (November 22–December 21)

Sagittarius is a zodiac sign that likes to think about the bigger picture. That’s great! A lot of people would definitely benefit from doing more of that. But that doesn’t mean the little things don’t matter. Ponder your dreams and philosophies, but don’t zoom so far out that you can’t see what’s right in front of you. Daily routines and interactions may feel boring or insignificant, but there might be more there than you realize. “For Sagittarius,” Ridout says, “this is a communication overhaul. [You’re] always about higher philosophy, but do you like the way that you handle your day-to-day life and communication?” Stop and smell the roses. Tell the people you care about you love them. Small gestures could be a big deal. Finding the perfect gift for them, based on their zodiac sign, could do the trick.

Capricorn (December 22–January 19)

Capricorn tends to think about life in terms of tangible measurements of their success. Did they get that promotion they were aiming for? How much was their bonus last year? This full moon will challenge Capricorn to see past material things and think instead about intangible values. You may value money and wealth, but perhaps what you’re really seeking is a sense of personal accomplishment. Maybe you’re craving approval from others. Contemplate what truly drives you. Ridout poses the question: “What were the things you thought you wanted but didn’t bring you joy?” The answers may surprise you and reshuffle your priorities.

Aquarius (January 20–February 18)

“It’s been a hugely transformative time already for Aquarius,” Ridout says of 2021, “so this is a moment for radical self-release.” Everything that makes an Aquarius an Aquarius—ingenuity, creativity, inspiration—is amplified by the blue moon. It’s time to dream bigger than you ever have before and start preparing for the future you wish to have. “Imagine yourself in your ideal world,” Ridout says. “Where you want to go and who you want to be when you get there.” More than any other zodiac sign, you have the ability and the belief to realize your vision.

Pisces (February 19-March 20)

Pisces, on the other hand, can too frequently drift into dreams, so what would be most transformative for them would be to ground themselves in reality. As with Sagittarius, it would behoove Pisces to focus on the now. “It’s about present-moment awareness,” Ridout says. “Release thoughts about how things could be in favor of how they actually are.” When you find yourself thinking, “I wish…” or “if only…,” stop and contemplate what is already good in your life. That could be your family, your career, your pets, or anything else. Love what you have and, for now, let that be enough.
