The Best New Year’s Resolution, According to Your Zodiac Sign

It's going to be an intense year ahead with big astronomical forces at work. Here's how you should handle it.

The big-picture look at 2022

Making a New Year’s resolution is, fundamentally, the recognition that we want to be better versions of ourselves. It’s about figuring out the best way to harness our energy and our potential, and having some foresight as to what the new year may have in store for you can help with that. So when you ring in 2022, start thinking about how the incoming Pisces energy will affect your zodiac sign—and how you can use it to your advantage.

Pisces is a water sign known for its creativity, sensitivity, and spirituality. But like any zodiac sign, it also has its negative qualities, like a tendency for escapism when life gets tough. According to astrologer Emily Ridout, 2022 is going to be all about Pisces energy, so these are themes that every sign will have to deal with. “A couple days before the new year, Jupiter will enter Pisces,” she says. “This is significant because Jupiter is the ancient ruler of Pisces. Neptune is the modern ruler. Neptune is also in Pisces right now. For most of the year, Jupiter and Neptune will both be in Pisces, which indicates a year of extremes.” Interestingly, 2022 is the year of the Water Tiger in Chinese astrology, which also predicts a year of big ups and downs.

What this means for you

Emotionally, this could mean a surge of creative and spiritual energy that will help you realize your dreams, or at least push you to take the next step in life. On the flip side, it could also indicate a wave of intense feelings that you might not feel equipped to deal with. “Every transit has opportunities for growth or opportunities to deny and shut down,” Ridout warns. It’s up to each zodiac sign to decide if they’re going to take this opportunity to realize their potential or shrink from it because it seems too scary or difficult to tackle.

The lunar nodes will also move out of Gemini and Sagittarius in 2022 and into Taurus and Scorpio. “That will give us, collectively, a bigger focus on becoming steady in the practical areas of life,” Ridout says. “We might even have some financial shifts, [like] in the stock market or in cryptocurrency.” On a personal level, you’ll want to examine your resources and how you’re using them. While Pisces energy will push you to think about lofty goals, these particular movements mean it’s also important to shore up the proverbial ground beneath your feet.

The best New Year’s resolution for your zodiac sign will give you the best shot at successfully navigating both the spiritual and practical concerns brought on by these planetary shifts. Focus on the right thing—and align yourself with the people you’re most compatible with—and you could end up having your best year yet.

Aries (March 21–April 19)

“Aries is going to get a hit of Jupiter this year, too,” Ridout says. The presence of Jupiter will intensify Aries’ core qualities, like their boldness, sense of leadership, and capacity for action. “This is not the time to play small,” she advises. “This is the time to be radically honest: ‘What is the dream that I’m too scared to even admit I have?’ Make a plan of action, or take a step every day toward it.” Create a vision board or write monthly, weekly, or even daily goals in your day planner to make it happen. For example, if you’ve always wanted to learn a new language, set a goal of studying at least 30 minutes per day or three times per week. Surrounding yourself with your zodiac power color can help to empower you and keep you on the right path.

Taurus (April 20–May 20)

Uranus is still in Taurus in 2022, notes Ridout, and this planet is going to want Taurus to break free and try new things. When the new year throws problems at this earth sign, Taurus should approach them in a different way. “One of the biggest things they could do is learn a practical skill,” Ridout says about the coming year. “Cooking, sewing—something tangible. Learn Excel spreadsheets or something that would be practical no matter what.” We don’t want to say you’re going to need to have a fallback option…but you should probably have a fallback option. That way, if there are any major shifts in your finances or just life in general, you’ll be able to catch yourself. It may help to know your sign’s biggest career strength.

Gemini (May 21–June 20)

Geminis, take note: It won’t just be important for you to make a New Year’s resolution for 2022—you’ll actually need to write it down. In a big year like this, sticking to your resolution will be of the utmost importance, and Gemini is one of the zodiac signs that will benefit from this the most. “They move so quickly, they might not stop to process what they’ve learned,” Ridout says of the air sign. She suggests starting a progress journal to do this. Reflection isn’t something that comes naturally to people born under this sign; they generally like to keep themselves busy in the now. But a journal (or even a diary) can help you keep track of the challenges you’ve faced—big or small—and how you’ve overcome them. Your future self will thank you for these pieces of wisdom.

Cancer (June 21–July 22)

“The cardinal signs were beaten up in 2020 by Pluto, Saturn, and Jupiter,” Ridout says (the cardinal signs being Cancer, Aries, Libra, and Capricorn). “They went through the ringer. Now, they’re almost free of all of that.” While Aries’ way of breaking out of a bad time is to be big and bold, Cancer people will need to lick their wounds. “Cancer would do well to start scheduling regular self-care rituals,” Ridout advises. Set up a weekly massage or pedicure for yourself—you deserve it! Here are more of the best ways to de-stress, depending on your zodiac sign.

Leo (July 23–August 22)

“Things that are false or only appearance-based are going to fall away in 2022,” Ridout predicts. For example, fair-weather or otherwise untrustworthy friends may show you their true colors this year. Or Leos who define themselves by their jobs may come to realize that, if they lose their employment, they aren’t as sure about who they really are as they once thought. “The surest way to get [a Leo] out of any false identities is to be in service of others,” says Ridout. “The best thing they could do is volunteer—be a true leader in their community.” Finding a greater purpose by helping those less fortunate than themselves, or even helping the environment, will put things in much-needed perspective and get them closer to finding out who they are at their core.

Virgo (August 23–September 22)

Virgos will quite literally need to return to their roots in 2022. In the midst of the wild cosmic forces at work, people born under this earth sign will find calm by communing with their zodiac element. “Virgo would do well to get out in nature,” Ridout says. “That could mean walking through a park at your lunch break or [taking] a hiking trip or fishing trip.” Virgo can avoid being swept up by the changing tides of the day-to-day by grounding themselves and finding clarity in the natural world. When you find yourself too much in your head, go outside and be active. Resolve to go for regular hikes or even take up bird-watching. Whatever it is, you’ll benefit from quality time outdoors this year.

Libra (September 23–October 22)

A cardinal sign like Cancer, Libra has been through some serious hardships in the last couple of years. But they are finally moving past that, and now that they can come up for air, Libras should take advantage of the newfound calm and set aside time for extra TLC. “They’re going to benefit from filling their own cup in the same way that Cancer will,” Ridout says. “Go on a solo date: scheduled, purposeful you time.” As the zodiac sign that represents justice, Libras tend to mediate problems for others. Enjoying time to yourself will give you the balance you crave. Take yourself to a movie or out to dinner on a regular basis, or buy yourself a few of these self-care gifts to get in the right headspace.

Scorpio (October 23–November 21)

Scorpio is one of the signs that will benefit the most from the jolt of creative energy Pisces has to offer. “Scorpios are in for an influx of energy,” Ridout says. “They’re going to need to schedule time for creativity.” This will provide an excellent outlet to channel your deepest feelings, as well as simply help you feel refreshed. If you love to paint but for one reason or another haven’t had time to focus on it, you need to make the time in 2022. If you’re a journalist, set aside time for creative writing. Regardless of the type of creativity you engage in, the act of creating will help you reach your full potential and weather any storm. Looking for something good to read? This is the best book for each zodiac sign.

sagittarius New Years, Getty Images

Sagittarius (November 22–December 21)

“They’re past a hard transit,” Ridout says of Sagittarius. “Now’s a great moment to realize they aren’t going to be the same as they were two years ago. A Sagittarius who used to really value travel may not value travel anymore. Or maybe they were into political philosophy and then became disenchanted with it. This is their time to start to explore something new.” Pursue any budding interests. Take a class. You’re going to want to find a new source of enrichment and a hobby that perfectly suits you.

capricorn New Years, Getty Images

Capricorn (December 22–January 19)

Another cardinal sign, Capricorn has also been through a lot in the past couple of years. In the new year, they’ll benefit the most from stepping back and realizing how strong they’ve been. “Capricorn tends to progress but not appreciate anything they’ve done,” Ridout says. “Be grateful for the progress you’ve made and the people and tools you have, instead of constantly looking toward the future.” Capricorns have a tendency to get discouraged, so Ridout recommends keeping a gratitude journal. When you feel like you’re stuck, remind yourself of all that you’ve achieved so far. Reading the most inspirational quote for your zodiac sign can also help.

Aquarius (January 20–February 18)

In 2022, Jupiter will move out of Aquarius, but Saturn will still be there. Saturn, a planet that urges the establishment of rules and structures, will want folks born under this sign to roll up their sleeves and get to work. “Now is the moment to build a new habit,” Ridout says. “Focus on the hard work of rebuilding and organizing things.” Organizing the tangible aspects of your life, like your home or the files on your computer, will help you get in the right headspace to organize your life on a grander scale in the new year.

pisces New Years, Getty Images

Pisces (February 19–March 20)

It’s a make-or-break year for you, Pisces. Jupiter will come in and magnify the effects that Neptune, your current ruler planet, is having on you. “Neptune can rule the dream that you most want to create and the dream state where you are escaping reality,” explains Ridout. “If [Pisces people] have used Neptune as a way to fuel addiction, that could get much, much worse if allowed to persist.” If you have a drinking problem, now is the time to resolve to get help. Even if your addiction is something innocuous, like watching too much TV, it’s still getting in the way of time that could be spent pursuing your goals.

The bottom line? This is the time to either reach your maximum potential or waste your shot. “Give up your biggest vice and replace it with a conscious habit, like meditation or journaling.” Another idea is to set up a workout regimen. Whatever you do, the point is to create a positive habit that will get you in the right mindset to actively chase your dream—and capture it.
