The ultimate summer essential
What are everyone’s go-to shoes during the summer? Flip-flops, of course! The best flip-flops for women are the perfect complement to the season’s best swimsuits and cover-ups or your favorite sundresses, shorts, and business casual looks, and they can help you stay cool and comfortable. They very well may be the world’s perfect shoes…as long as you choose the right ones.
Since we’ve all probably chosen our fair share of the wrong ones, here’s what you need to know: For all-day wear, you want flip-flops that are on par with the most well-constructed sandals and walking shoes. “Look for ones that contain arch supports, rubber soles, and a cushioned footbed,” says Casey Ann Pidich, DPM, a podiatrist at Park Avenue Podiatric Care and an attending surgeon at Central Park Ambulatory Surgery. “These characteristics help support our feet and joints when walking on all types of surfaces other than sand.”
The best ones will also work seamlessly with your lifestyle and your specific needs, so you’ll need a few types for your different summer activities. And no matter what you wear them with, make sure your feet are in tip-top shape by giving yourself regular pedicures. “In addition, use a pumice stone regularly on hardened skin on the heels,” advises Dr. Pidich. “Our heels are exposed to the elements more when wearing flip-flops, so it’s essential to make sure the skin isn’t cracked open. This cracking of the skin can lead to open sores and exposes our skin to infections.”
So, grab your favorite nail polish and scoop up the best flip-flops to suit every style, foot need, and budget. Once you’ve filled your cart, make sure you have all of your other summer essentials, including sunglasses, sun hats, and sunscreen.
L.L. Bean Maine Isle Flip-Flops
These adorable flip-flops are just as durable and well-made as L.L. Bean’s other iconic products, and they are the perfect complement to a casual everyday look. The nylon straps, which come in polka dots or stripes, won’t dig into the skin, and the footbed is made from shock-absorbing, long-lasting EVA (rubber-like plastic known for its cushioning). This pair also boasts non-stick traction on the bottom, making them perfect for walking around town, the beach, or your house. One five-star reviewer raves: “This is about the seventh pair of these I have bought! They are comfortable and fun to match with your outfits.”
Clark’s Breeze Sea Flip-Flops
It’s one thing for us to tell you that a flip-flop is comfortable—and it’s another thing to read thousands upon thousands of five-star reviews to that effect. In this case, we’re talking more than 36,000 five-star reviews on Amazon. These flip-flops from British shoe company Clark’s are designed to be light on your feet but to protect them, too. They have an Ortholite footbed, a cushioned insole that bounces with you, and an EVA shock-absorbing mid and outsole that protects feet. Translation: These are the best flip-flops for walking. One Amazon reviewer writes, “My husband and I walk two miles every night, and I decided to put these to the test. (I usually wear my running shoes.) These far surpassed my expectations. They felt so supportive, and it made me feel like skipping!”
Bonus: The top of the sandal has a hook-and-loop design, so you can adjust them to create the perfect fit. And they come in 31 different colors, from basic black to faux snakeskin to eye-popping aqua, all of which will help pull together an outfit.
Okabashi Maui Flip-Flops
These vegan, sustainably made, and recyclable flip-flops just may be the most eco-friendly options you’ll find. Plus, they’re designed along the principles of reflexology, so every step you take in them is supported and comfortable. In fact, they’re Dr. Pidich’s favorite pair of flip-flops. “They contain an arch support, are eco-friendly, and I own a pair and wear them to the beach,” she says. “In addition, I like knowing that they can be recycled at the Okabashi factory where they are produced.” Believe it or not, these flip-flops can even be tossed in the dishwasher when it’s time to clean them!

If you’re the type whose skin gets rubbed raw the first few times you wear flip-flops in the summer, this amazing feature will also protect delicate skin. One important note about flip-flops, no matter how awesome they are: You really shouldn’t wear them while driving.
