Target Is Recalling Nearly 5 Million Candles—Here’s What You Need to Know
The recalled candles pose laceration and burn hazards.
Almost no feeling matches lighting a candle and curling up with a blanket to unwind. Whether with a favorite book, TV show or movie, it’s pretty much the pinnacle of relaxation. Although for those with certain types of Target candles, a hazard putting owners at risk for lacerations and burns can quickly ruin a relaxing moment.
A May 18 notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a Target recall of nearly 5 million candles due to potential laceration and burn hazards. Target warns consumers of the need to “take immediate action,” on their website. So before throwing out or returning any candles, here’s what you need to know.
What Target candles have been recalled?
Target is recalling around 4.9 million Threshold glass jar candles—more specifically, 5.5 ounce 1-Wick, 14 ounce 3-Wick and 20 ounce 3-Wick candles that come in a wide variety of scents. These scents include Apple Blossom and Breeze, Coconut Sorbet, and Warm Cider and Cinnamon, amongst several others.
Why are these candles being recalled?
According to the CPSC, the jar of the candle can crack or break while in use, posing laceration and burn hazards. In fact, 137 reports of Threshold candle jars breaking or cracking while in use were reported to Target. Out of these 137, six injuries were reported which included lacerations as well as severe burns.
How do I know if I have a recalled candle?
To know if a candle is part of the recall, consumers can check the printed item numbers at the bottom of the glass jar. A full list of the recalled product numbers can be found on the CPSC and/or Target websites. The candles were sold nationwide exclusively in Target stores and online on Target’s website between August 2019 to March 2023. Retail candle prices spanned from $3 to $20.
What should I do if I have a recalled candle?
If you do have a recalled candle, the CPSC advises ceasing use of it immediately. The affected candle can be returned to any Target store for a full refund. Alternatively, consumers can also contact Target and receive a prepaid return label to return the candle by mail instead.
For any additional questions or concerns, consumers can contact Target at 1-800-440-0680 between 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. CT any day of the week. You can also visit the Target website, click on “Recalls” at the bottom of the website page and “Home Goods” for additional information.
