Have you noticed this feature with the new iOS 14 update?

The new iOS update for iPhones brought a lot of new changes. Many people took advantage of the customizable home screen features and spent many more hours than they would like to admit making it look aesthetically pleasing. But, if you only made a few small changes to your home screen and spent some time exploring the other new features you may have noticed that a dot occasionally pops up at the top of your screen—sometimes it’s orange and sometimes it’s green. Here are some other hidden iPhone facts you never knew about.

So what are those colored dots?

If you’ve noticed the new tiny dots, you’ve probably observed that they appear when you’re using particular apps. These dots are part of the enhanced privacy features that were part of the iOS 14 update. Apple is working to give you more control over the data you share and be more transparent with users about how their data is being used. When a green dot appears at the top of your phone it’s letting you know that your iPhone’s camera is being used. And the orange dot means that your iPhone’s microphone is being used. Watch out for these things you’re doing to your iPhone that Apple experts wouldn’t.

How do you know which apps are using the camera or microphone?

To find out which app is using your camera or microphone swipe down from the top right corner when you see the dot and the name of the app, as well as an orange microphone symbol or a green camera symbol, will appear at the top of the Control Center.

Can this feature be disabled?

If you noticed that an app was using your camera or microphone and you don’t want it to you can disable access. Go to Settings > Privacy > Camera and switch off the apps that you no longer want to have access to your camera. You can do the same with your microphone by going to Settings > Privacy > Microphone.

It can be comforting to know that your phone is transparent about when the microphone and camera are being used. Before you feel completely safe though, make sure you know about these red flags that someone is tracking your cell phone.
