Sweat is inevitable. But even though we all do it, no one needs to know about it—or worse, smell it. Enter Lume deodorant, a smooth stick that controls odor for up to 72 hours. This isn’t an average deodorant, however. It’s a full-body deodorizer that claims to block B.O. just about anywhere you sweat. Yes, anywhere.
“Because people notice increased sweat and odor in other areas, not just the underarms, sometimes it can be helpful to use products like deodorants in other areas, too,” says Dr. Marisa Garshick, a board-certified dermatologist of MDCS Dermatology. And as summer approaches, we could all benefit from a little extra protection.
What is Lume deodorant?
On particularly hot summer days, it’s sometimes surprising to discover where sweat is able to pool up. From traditional spots like underarms and the chest to more discrete areas like thighs, tummy folds and private parts, Lume body deodorant blocks the smell before it starts.
The solid deodorant is free of aluminum, baking soda and parabens to create a skin-safe formula. Not to be confused with an antiperspirant, Lume controls the odor before it even forms instead of masking or neutralizing B.O. after it’s been unleashed. It’s pH-optimized for a natural solution anywhere you go.
Developed by a certified OB/GYN, Lume is also safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. However, keep in mind that the alpha hydoxy acid (AHA) may cause sun sensitivity, so pair it with sunscreen. “This product also contains mandelic acid, a type of exfoliating acid, so it is important to avoid using on broken or already irritated skin,” says Dr. Garshick.
How to use Lume deodorant
Lume deodorant works like a standard deodorant. Just swipe it directly on your skin. There’s no armpit detox required, and you’ll be able to smell (or rather, not smell) immediate results. The stick application can be used on just about any body part, though not without some caution. For intimate settings, it may be best to use it for a few days a week, instead of immediately before intimacy.
“While this product can be considered for use in other locations, it is important to be cautious with use because the skin near the groin is delicate and sensitive,” says Dr. Garshick. “It is recommended to patch test to a small area to ensure no reaction prior to using on a large area.”
Sweat stains can be a hassle. Although Lume claims that it doesn’t leave residue on skin and clothes, that’s a pretty tough feat and a couple of reviewers say their black clothing wasn’t completely safe from white streaks. Still, it’s totally washable and won’t leave yellow stains on clothes.
Lume also comes in a wipe and lotion form. The deodorant is perfect for travel, especially in tropical climates where you’re up against the hot sun and humidity. If a vacation isn’t in the near future, throw it in a work bag for all-day freshness.
The best Amazon user reviews
With an average 4.2-star rating and over 16,000 five-star ratings on Amazon, it’s safe to say Lume deodorant is loved by thousands.
Bradley B. used to be called “The Reeker” in high school because of his body odor. “I wish this product had been around sixty years ago. I’m super impressed! …It is incredibly effective against my locker room like underarm stank! Even after I shower and scrub out my armpits…This stuff really does continuously work on B/O. For the first time in my life I have confidence concerning my body odor. Highly recommended!”
“I’m 31 years old and have never been comfortable with my odor, especially at the end of a long work day,” writes Jamie Malone. “I always felt like I had B.O. but OMG! I have worn this all day and still smell like vanilla. Never in my life have I wanted to smell my armpits more! I was overheated, moving all around, felt anxious and felt like I sweat with absolutely no odor at the end of the day! It’s incredible! I almost cried for joy!”
Melanie Warren admits she developed a problem with sweating under her belly and in the bends of her legs after she turned 50. “I was mortified! I am dealing with people and worrying about smelling like, well, funk…This stuff works really, really well! Another thing: Because of the sweat that would gather in my folds, I was often chafing there, and/or itching like crazy. I use hydrocortisone cream to control the rash and itch. Lume did not irritate my skin at all and worked well with the ointment. I’m a believer now.”
