What should you consider when naming a hamster?

Yes, your hamster needs a name, but you might be wondering just how important names are with these tiny animals. Do hamsters even know their names? Indeed, they do! “Hamsters are very smart, so with proper training, your hamster can learn to recognize and respond to its name [over time],” says Jennifer Bruns, DVM, a veterinarian with PetSmart Veterinary Services, who also notes that they’re surprisingly social creatures. “Just like with any pet, name them something that matches their personality or a name that brings you joy.”

Once you and your hamster start to bond, you can even start to teach it tricks, such as standing or jumping. These little guys are also natural runners, says Dr. Bruns, so you can guide them through obstacle courses. As with other pets, choose names that are short and don’t sound like other commands so as not to confuse them. Of course, feel free to create a long-tail version of your hamster’s name for your own amusement. It’s the little things in life, after all!
